《Anna》
Tribute to the Newton massacre, a fictional story by Jo Yang
It was the Fourth of May; although this time of the year suggests that the weather should at least be offering some sort of warm comfort, however, the sun’s rays aren’t as generous for the people who lived in a small town named Lipton.
Just like any other day, Anna turned to lock the doors to her small two-bedroom apartment in a quiet neighborhood before leaving for work at the local Elementary school. She was a small town girl, who had graduated from a liberal college not far away from home with an English bachelors degree.
After college she moved back home and took exams to be certified as a k-12 schoolteacher. It was not something she had thought she’d do when she entered college. In fact, she had always been indifferent towards the occupation since her mom had worked as a high school math teacher for twenty some years.
Entering college she had no idea what she wanted to do or major in at all. After hopping around taking some engineering classes as well as business classes, she finally decided that literature was what she liked best, and what she felt most comfortable with.
The fact that one can realize their own dreams and fantasies with only simple tools such as a pencil and a piece of paper in hand felt exhilarating to her. As graduation rolled around, she almost decided on going for an internship, as an assistant for an editor of a magazine, until that last semester, she took an introduction to education class and finally found her passion for teaching. Sometimes it’s a scary thing to see how you yourself can influence another human being so much just through teaching.
The kids looked up to her as their role models and the achievement felt great. So now, here she is, arriving up at the Northeast Elementary School, it’s her third year teaching the third grade class here.
The morning was just as usual, as she walked through the door a couple of her colleagues greeted her with coffee in hand and she returned the action with a bright smile on her face. She always believed that happiness was contagious, and hoped that even if the kids didn’t understand a word she taught that day, at least they will remember her smile, and remember long after they had graduated to have a positive attitude living.
She arrived with 30 minutes to spare before a hectic day would begin. After she hung up her light jacket and settled down to read the morning newspaper for a while, the kids began to arrive one after another. A string of cheerful “Hi Ms.Hsu” erupted and she could feel the energy in the air.
Just another day in the work, as she gathered the kids for the last event of the day, story reading, or so she thought.
“brrring brrring” was it the fire alarm The kids lined up and did their head count while behaving very nicely as the intercom made noises.
“BANG! BANG!”
What is that sound The kids looked at each other wondering in their 8 year-old minds.
“Everyone move to the coat room, be very quiet like the little sheep in the story remember guys” trying to calm her nerves she spoke with a tone of authority. However, she could feel the hair on the back of her neck stand up. Something was going very wrong.
She hurriedly locked the door behind her, trying to shut off whatever that is going on outside. God I pray to you, please help us, she mumbled under her breath. But to no avail, the incessant pounding of the door, people screaming, shouting, and crying.
She thought it was just another regular day, as a regular third grade schoolteacher, in a nice little town called Lipton.
As if everything fell to slow motions, she saw the world’s most evil villain, expressionless, shooting at her kids mercilessly. She tried to stand in front of her kids and protect them, even though she too knew that it was hopeless. Something hit her, but she still kept her smile and held them in her arms. She hoped that her smile was what they saw, if that is the last thing they could remember.
